第12回の特集では、Identify the Ideaという問題形式の解法を徹底的に分析します。これは、「Complete the Sentences」、「 Complete the Passage」、「Highlight the Idea」同様、
Interactive Readingと呼ばれる読解力を評価する５つの問題形式のうちの４番目に位置づけられています。
このタイプの問題では、パッセージの趣旨を理解し、提供された選択肢の中から最も適切な要約を選び出す能力が試されます。具体的には、直前の問題で読んだ英文から、最も適切な趣旨や要約を選択する形式となっています。

１）この問題では文章全体の趣旨を捉えることが求められます。
２）タイマーは、３問前のComplete the Sentencesの問題より引き続きカウントされています。
３）Complete the Passageで使われたパッセージを使用して出題されます。
４）この問題は、Interactive Readingに属する５つの問題形式のうちの４番目の問題となっています。

▶効果的に解答プロセス
ステップ１）スキミングを行い、既読のパッセージの全体的な流れを確認
✔この問題で同じパッセージを３度読むことになるため、意味を再確認する程度に高速でざっと目を通す程度とする。特に初めのパラグラフでは重要な情報が含まれるケースが多いです。
✔内容がすでに頭に入っているようであれば、このステップは飛ばし、ステップ２から始めることも可能
ステップ２）全ての選択肢に目を通し、関連しない選択肢を素早く除外
✔この段階で少なくとも1つ、時には2つ、パッセージの内容と全く関係のない選択肢に気づくはずです。即刻消去しましょう。
▶正解に導く２つのコツ
コツ1）第一段落または前半にヒントあり！
✔パッセージは、基本ルールであるparagraph form (段落形式) のルールに則って書かれているため、筆者の意図は通常、冒頭で明示されることが多いです。
コツ2）消去法を活用すべし！
✔全くパッセージの内容と無関係な選択肢は、1つ、2つあるめ、分かり次第、即削除しましょう。
